Successful Completion of “GUB Spelling Bee Competition”

Prioritizing the students studying in different departments at the Permanent Campus of Green University of Bangladesh (GUB), Green University Language Center has successfully arranged the university’s first ever Spelling Bee Competition. This intense two-day-long online competition entitled “GUB Spelling Bee Competition: Permanent Campus” has been held on May 8 and 9, using the online platform Zoom and the game-based learning platform Kahoot. The main objective behind this competition was to enable the students to sharpen their English spelling, enrich their English vocabulary, and encourage their correct usage of English language in academic and professional sectors. Owing to the pandemic situation, Green University Language Center has taken the initiative to organize the Spelling Bee competition using the cutting-edge ICT tools and techniques. The university-wide circulation of the competition-related information has motivated the students to join in bulk. The participants have been provided with an exclusive vocabulary list beforehand for their proper preparation as well as a detailed guideline on how to participate in this competition. To make things more convenient for the participants, the organizers have arranged an interactive Demo/Practice Session on May 7 to enlighten the spellers with the rules and regulations of the competition..
About 180 students of various educational levels from the Permanent Campus of Green University of Bangladesh have registered for the competition. Among them, 57 students paved their ways to the Final Round held on May 9 after the previous day’s nail-biting semi-final round. The participants’ intelligence has been challenged by various types and levels of questions throughout the competition. During the Final Round, the exhilarating presence of Prof. Dr. Md. Golam Samdani Fakir, Honorable Vice Chancellor of Green University of Bangladesh (GUB), and Prof. Dr. Md. Abdur Razzaque, Honorable Pro Vice Chancellor of Green University of Bangladesh (GUB), has uplifted the competitive spirits of the participants. In the event, the honorable guests have stated the necessity of such competitions to upgrade the competitive, communicative, and psycho-motor skills of the students, which will ultimately help the students in their personal, academic, and professional fields. Among others, Ms. Umme Ruman, Director of Permanent Campus, Green University of Bangladesh, has also graced the occasion with her motivational speech.
Shaikh Ayeasha Akter Ratna, a student from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, has aced this high-voltage competition. Besides her, the other four from the top five spellers are – Md. Nahid Islam (2nd, CSE), Md. Abu Taief Siddique (3rd, CSE), Nazmul Hossain (4th, CSE), Md. Ashraful Islam (5th, CSE), who have been awarded with e-certificates and exciting prize money amounts. Moreover, the top ten contenders have also been awarded with e-certificates for their extraordinary performances. After displaying the e-certificates, the event has successfully ended with the congratulation speech from the honorable guests. The thrilling competition has come to an end with an optimistic note that the life-long learning inspiration aroused in the students’ psyche through this competition will be everlasting. Green University Language Center looks forward to arranging more successful and effective events like this to sharpen the students’ skills and boost their spirits during this pandemic by keeping them engaged in multifarious co-curricular and competitive activities.
